The Dominican Republic is a wonderful, exotic place and the most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean. The favourite destinations of most tourists include Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Las Terrenas, Cabarete, Sosua and Bavaro.
The best time to visit the Dominican Republic is… well, anytime. Depends on what you prefer: the peak season rush takes over the country in July – August and between December and late February. If you prefer a less crowded atmosphere, you can choose to plan your trip outside these periods, since the temperatures don’t vary that much and the Caribbean region it is pretty much warm and sunny all the time. March to May seem like the best time to go there, since the Atlantic hurricane season affects these regions from June to November, and it can get quite unpleasant.
You can get in the Dominican Republic by car, passing through one of the 4 border crossings between this country and Haiti, by ferry from Puerto Rico or, the best choice, by plane. There are many options that you can choose from, departing both from Europe and the United States.
Here are the most interesting things about the main destinations in the Dominican Republic and some suggestions on what to visit and which activities to try out:
1. Santo Domingo
The capital of the Dominican Republic and a city with a very rich cultural, architectural and artistic heritage, Santo Domingo is probably the best place to choose for the first time in the country. You will discover the beauty of the country and really get to know the culture.
The richest region that you can visit, in terms of tourist attractions, is the Colonial Zone. Many wonderful buildings, great examples of 15th and 16th century architecture, an incursion in the history of the country and the city, a conglomeration of fascinating pedestrian streets, cafes and amazing views. Visit the museums, such as Alcázar de Colón, Naval Museum of the Atarazanas, Museum of the Casas Reales, the Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum of History and Geography. Don’t forget about the beautiful parks: Mirador Norte Park, Enriquillo Park, Mirador Sur Park, Independencia Park, Colón Park and many more.
2. Puerto Plata
This city is a very popular resort destination, well known for its beautiful beaches. One of the best things to see here is Christo Redentor, the monument at the top of Parc Nacionale de Isabella de Torres. To reach it, you can take a funicular to the top of the mountain. This monument is actually a replica of the original one from Rio de Janeiro. Check out Fortaleza San Felipe and Museo Del Amber too.
It would be a shame if you didn’t reserve a day for enjoying the warmth and the sun on one of the beautiful beaches here. You can also try taking a sailing tour on a catamaran, a city tour or scuba diving.
3. Las Terrenas
This city is located on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic and it is a little quieter than the others, but still a wonderful place to visit to relax and enjoy the Caribbean paradise.
Check out Pueblo de los Pescadores, Playa Punta Popy, Punta Bonita and Playa Las Ballenas for an authentic Caribbean vibe.
A great activity to try out in Las Terrenas is diving. Healthy coral reefs await the curious diver. The marine life diversity is beautiful and the best places to dive and snorkel and reachable by boat.
